LJWhat is there really to say about LJ Hefner? He co-founded the band and was in it 'til the end. He wrote almost all of the songs. He never stopped moving on stage. He constantly broke strings... you get the idea. The guy knows more about music than you can learn in 4 years of music school and he never stops educating himself. After The Hefs, LJ moved to Jersey City where he's a record seller. I understand he's very happy! If you ever need something new to listen to, just ask.
BOBBYBobby was an original founder along with LJ. He not only held down the beats, he was also responsible for most of the artwork. He also got the Hefs a lot of great shows through his huge network of friends playing the rock, as well as contacts made through his zine, The Micromag. Bob now lives in Kansas City and does freelance art and design. Check out his website bobdeck.com - it's cool!
BILLYBilly joined in on bass shortly after Bobby and LJ started playing together. He was already in several other musical ventures, most notably The Teriakies. After leaving the Hefs, he stuck around to record and produce the Through the Night album. Some songs were written while Billy was still on bass duty. He kept playing and recording bands around town and today lives in Brooklyn where he's collecting another college degree somewhere!
BRYCEBryce joined in on organ about a month before the Hefs went to Austin to record Lay Off... He was just winding things down with the long running ska group The Norman Three-Sixty, when he heard of a chance to record and tour Europe. He quickly began adding percussion to the live shows and during the second tour started mixing in a lead guitar. Bryce now lives in Detroit, where he manages an apartment building.
JAMESJames was literally found in a coffee shop by LJ. After one listen he was in. Just listen to his drum work on Through the Night (which was recorded just a few months after joining) to understand his creativity behind the skins. Originally baited by the chance to tour Europe (sorry), James stayed on till the Hefs demise. After studying the culinary arts in New Hampshire, he now resides in Portland, OR where he's the coolest "Lunch Lady" in town!
JOSHAfter Billy decided to call it quits on bass, Josh was a natural replacement. He was a long time friend of the band and had played with several others, including the Danny Pound Band. Like a lot of bass players, Josh is an excellent guitarist as well. He laid down some smooth 12-string on Through the Night (recorded only a few months after joining). Josh left the Hefs to move to Portland, OR, and then to Japan. He's now living in Spain somewhere, having a beer and a nap every afternoon...
CHRISChris played with the Hefs only a short year after Josh left. He was a seasoned player on a lot instruments, including the upright. Chris was around for the creation of most of the songs that would end up on the last album, but had to leave before getting to record them. Last I heard he was living in Philadelphia, and then somewhere California. Chris, if you're out there, drop me a line!
KEITHKeith was already a huge admirer of the Hefners when he heard they needed someone on bass. His quote: "Long time fan, first time member." His ability to calculate odds at an astonishing rate also made him a great asset in the financial department! Keith played in a ton of bands before joining - most recently The Switch. In fact, the Hefs still owe him a solo album as part of the deal for joining! Listen to his song on the last album for a clue to what that will sound like someday. Keith still lives in Lawrence until he moves to a major gambling metropolis someday. Oh ya, he can also tell you the meaning of the universe if you're so inclined!
